Clinical Supervision and CRPO Requirements: What Ontario Therapists Need to Know
If you're a psychotherapy student, RP (Qualifying), or Registered Psychotherapist in Ontario, understanding CRPO's clinical supervision requirements is essential for maintaining compliance and developing your clinical skills.
Clinical supervision is more than discussing cases. According to the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO), supervision is a structured, documented relationship that supports professional growth, client safety, ethical practice, and the effective use of self in therapy.
How Much Clinical Supervision Do You Need?
RP (Qualifying) registrants are required to receive ongoing clinical supervision while working toward full registration.
To move from RP (Qualifying) to RP status, therapists must complete
at least 450 direct client contact (DCC) hours, and
100 hours of clinical supervision.
At least 50% (50 hours) must be individual or dyadic
The remaining (up to 50%, 50 hours) can be group supervision
To achieve independent practice, therapists must accumulate
a total of at least 1,000 direct client contact hours (550 more from transfer from Qualifying to RP), and
150 hours of clinical supervision (50 more from transfer from Qualifying to RP).
At least 50% (25 hours) must be individual or dyadic
The remaining (up to 50%, 25 hours) can be group supervision
Who Can Provide Supervision?
As of June 2025, CRPO has the following requirements for supervisors in Ontario:
The supervisor must be registered in good standing with a regulatory college whose members may practice psychotherapy.
The supervisor must have five years’ extensive experience practicing psychotherapeutically with clients from the time they graduated from their program.
The supervisor must meet CRPO’s “independent practice” requirement.
The supervisor must have completed at least 30 hours of directed learning in providing clinical supervision.
The supervisor must complete CRPO’s learning module on clinical supervision.
Why Clinical Supervision Matters
While supervision is a regulatory requirement, it is also one of the most valuable tools for professional development. Quality supervision provides a space to:
Discuss challenging cases
Strengthen clinical skills
Explore ethical considerations
Increase confidence as a therapist
Prevent professional isolation and burnout
Many therapists continue seeking supervision even after achieving independent practice because of the ongoing benefits to their clinical work and professional growth.
